Abstract
This chapter touches on Paul O'Dwyer's vulnerability in 1953 amidst a turbulent political landscape. Despite the postwar economic boom and a stable law firm, O'Dwyer was drawn into his brother Bill's unstable life in Mexico City while navigating the dangerous terrain of Cold War America. It discusses how O'Dwyer's involvement with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) put him under FBI scrutiny. Though Paul left the NLG in 1953 during the height of Joe McCarthy's anti-communist crusade, he continued to defend accused Communists and political dissidents, notably helping Martha Dodd Stern avoid extradition. The chapter narrates how the NLG became a target for its defense of individual rights and left-wing members. Despite its declining membership due to governmental pressure, the NLG remained a thorn in J. Edgar Hoover's side, with figures like Leonard Boudin challenging FBI practices and defending those accused of subversion.
