A former French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, has been released from prison after serving just three weeks of a five-year sentence for his alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy. He was also allowed family visits and written/phone contact, but his movement was restricted to just one hour of solitary exercise each day.
Two bodyguards were stationed nearby, a measure the interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, attributed to Sarkozy's status and the potential threat against him.
Sarkozy served as president from 2007 to 2012, and since leaving office, he has faced numerous criminal inquiries. Prior to this conviction, he was even required to wear an electronic tag around his ankle after being found guilty of attempting to bribe a magistrate for confidential information relating to a separate case.
