Silca’s Josh Poertner gets his new product ideas from the craziest places.
Take the new Strip Chips, for example. These hot melt chain wax additives were inspired by the food industry, where they’re trying to find a replacement for trans fats and hydrogenated oils. Turns out, they can make it a whole lot easier to wax your chain, too, by eliminating the need to degrease your chain before waxing!
In this episode, we geek out on how that product works, the nuances of wax temperatures for proper chain waxing, and talk a lot about where his ideas come from, what else he’s excited about, and why his stuff costs more than everyone else’s.
I always love talking to Josh, and I think you’re going to really enjoy this one, too.

Jumped on the chain waxing trend recently. Seemed like too much of a pain previously, and was considering the $5 goodwill pot option, but so glad i went with the silica pot and strips, even though the pricing is way more. If you have silca’s wax pot and strip chips it takes a lot of steps and guessing out of it. Still took me maybe 1.5-2 hours to wax 3 new chains but most of that time is just waiting. Maybe other methods would have been slightly longer, but I couldn’t imagine doing all of the cleaning prep, guessing or using a temp gauge to know if my wax was at the correct temperatures, etc… the waxed chain feeling is really nice so far.
