Here we introduce a procedure, jet trimming, designed to mitigate these sources of contamination in jets initiated by light partons. This procedure is complimentary to existing methods developed for boosted heavy particles. We find that jet trimming can achieve significant improvements in event reconstruction, especially at high energy/luminosity hadron colliders like the LHC.

  • Mar 2, 2009 · Abstract: We introduce a new class of jet algorithms designed to return conical jets with a variable Delta R radius.

  • We introduce a new class of jet algorithms designed to return conical jets with a variable Delta R radius. A specific example, in which Delta R scales as 1/pT, proves particularly useful in capturing the kinematic features of a wide variety of hard scattering processes. We implement this Delta R scaling in a sequential recombination algorithm and test it by reconstructing resonance masses and kinematic endpoints. These test cases show 10-20% improvements in signal efficiency compared to fixed Delta R algorithms. We also comment on cuts useful in reducing continuum jet backgrounds.

  • As part of a large acid-rain research project of China’s National Basic Research Program (‘973 programme), aircraft campaigns were conduced in summer and autumn 2007 in several regions of China to improve the  understanding of vertical  exchange/transport processes and to evaluate satellite retrieval algorithms as well as regional transport. The study regions included the northeast (NE), which is China’s major agricultural base, the northwest (NW), which is sparsely populated and has an arid and semi-arid climate, and the central-eastern (CE) region, which is the largest flat area and thus the most populated and heavily industrialized region of China.

  • The measurement of the arrival time of a particle, such as a lepton, a photon, or a pion, reaching the detector provides valuable information. A similar measurement for a hadronic final state, however, is much more challenging as one has to extract the relevant information from a collection of particles. In this paper, we explore various possibilities in defining the time of a jet through the measurable arrival times of the jet constituents. We find that a definition of jet time based on a transverse momentum weighted sum of the times of the constituents has the best performance. For prompt jets, the performance depends on the jet trajectory. For delayed jets, the performance depends on the trajectory of the jet, the trajectory of the mother particle, and the location of the displaced vertex. Compared to the next-best-performing jet time definition, the transverse momentum weighted sum has roughly a factor of ten times better jet time resolution. We give a detailed discussion of the relevant effects and characterize the full geometrical dependence of the performance. These results highlight the critical importance of using a proper definition of jet time with its corresponding detector-dependent calibration and the exciting possibility of deepening our understanding of jets in the time domain.

  • Atmospheric cold plasma jets with various configurations have drawn intense interests in diverse applications, such as surface modification and endoscopic applications. In this paper, a long and ultra-flexible micro-sized cold plasma jet generator is presented and its characteristics are analyzed. The generator mainly consists of two concentric silicone tubes with the inner one acting as the gas channel and the outer one acting as insulating layer of heat and high voltage. Gold thin film was sputtered on the circular surface of inner tube to work as the electrode as well as separation layer of ultraviolet radiation. Electrical, optical and thermal characteristics of this generator were investigated. Cold microplasma jet can be generated and ejected to the ambient air with the length varied from 0.1 m to 2.5 m, and it can impact on the finger without electric and heat sensation. Optical emission spectra analysis indicated that reactive species like OH and O atoms were generated in the plasma. This device exhibits ultra-flexible property which can be arbitrarily bent and plugged into complex and deep environment. Localized internal surface modification of polyvinyl chloride tube using this microplasma jet was also demonstrated and the result showed that surface wettability can be greatly improved after plasma treatment. This generator shows great potential for internal surface processing, plasma endoscopic and maskless lithography applications.

  • ABSTRACT Mrk 231 is the closest radio-quiet quasar known and one of the most luminous infrared galaxies in the local Universe. It is characterized by the co-existence of a radio jet and powerful multiphase multiscale outflows, making it an ideal laboratory to study active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. We analyse the multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry data of Mrk 231 and estimate the jet head advance speed to be ≲0.013 c, suggesting a sub-relativistic jet flow. The jet position angle changes from −113○ in the inner parsec to −172○ at a projected distance of 25 pc. The jet structure change might result from either a jet bending following the rotation of the circum-nuclear disc or the projection of a helical jet on the plane of the sky. In the large opening angle (∼60○) cone, the curved jet interacts with the interstellar medium and creates wide-aperture-angle shocks that subsequently dissipate a large portion of the jet power through radiation and contribute to powering the large-scale outflows. The low power and bent structure of the Mrk 231 jet, as well as extensive radiation dissipation, are consistent with the obstruction of the short-length jet by the host galaxy’s environment.
