Stocking is used to restore native species to waters where they have been overfished or can no longer breed. "Give and take" stocking practices are those where fish are stocked only to be fished and then restocked.

Hagg Lake is one of western Oregon's largest lakes and is a premier warm water fishing destination. The lake is home to both the state record smallmouth bass and bullhead catfish. You can also find rainbow trout, yellow perch, largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill.

The Columbia and Willamette both offer outstanding warmwater fishing for bass and a variety of panfish including crappie. Good fishing is also available in the area's lakes and reservoirs such as Henry Hagg Lake which has produced state record smallmouth bass and brown bullhead catfish.

The fish fall between 50 to 150 feet, depending on how close to the lake the pilot can fly. Because of their small size, this process of dropping doesn't hurt the fish (it's like a high diver diving into a deep pool of water). The survival rate of these fish is around 99 percent.

Stock enhancement or “stocking” of recreational fisheries means raising fish in hatcheries and then releasing them into waters that already have some wild fish. I would propose that catching a trout of a size that only one-two percent of the fish in a given stream attain, be considered a trophy trout. In some streams that would be thirty inches, while in others it might be twenty inches, or even twelve inches. The skills needed to find and hook such a fish are the same.

Kokanee are native in some Oregon lakes, including Suttle Lake in the Cascade Range and Wallowa Lake in the northeast corner of the state. They've been stocked in several freshwater bodies and have developed a stronghold in many lakes near the valley, including Salem's favorite summer recreation hotspot: Detroit Lake.

The Scoggins Reservoir — also known as Hagg Lake — is located near Gaston. The reservoir stores approximately 53,323 acre-feet of water when full, of which 13,500-acre feet is available for drinking water.

At full pool Henry Hagg Lake covers 1153 acres; it has a maximum depth of 110 feet, an average depth of 51 feet, and the water level fluctuates about 22 feet annually.

Children must be under adult supervision at all times. According to Washington County Parks Superintendent Carl Switzer, "The only way to safely recreate in Hagg Lake is to use a personal flotation device at all times whether you're wading, swimming or boating.
